Electric Ascension: Parts 1-8
Electric Ascension
Atavistic, 2003

John Coltrane’s collective improvisation ‘Ascension’ from June, 1965 bears much in common with Ornette Coleman’s ‘Free Jazz’, recorded 5 years earlier. However, as noted by Archie Shepp in the LP’s liner notes: ‘Free Jazz created a new form and Ascension is a further step in the development of that form. The same can be said of the Rova Orkestrova’s Electric Ascension, recorded nearly 40 years later. As Rova saxophonist Larry Ochs says in his recording’s liner notes [this performance] ‘could not have been performed 40 years ago. Both technologically and conceptually, this performance could not have happened’. While Rova does not ‘Ascend’ in the same manner the original does as a collective expression of Coltrane’s religious convictions, they do an excellent job of using the original motif to spur themselves into a wide range of solo and collective pools, using their chosen instrumentation. The moods range from spiritual to downright eerie science fiction electronics, reminding one of 60′s sci-fi films. All in all, ti is a bold, adventurous task successfully undertaken by some of today’s improvisational masters.
